Aaron is a litigator, specialising in employment, public, white collar and sports law. Aaron's experience includes advising on contentious and non-contentious employment matters (including personal grievances, industrial disputes and contract negotiations) and on white collar crime and regulatory matters.

Aaron advises clients on a range of contentious and non-contentious employment matters, including personal grievances, industrial disputes, contract negotiations and drafting, ACC and health related matters, employee misconduct, occupational health and safety, and sports law. Aaron also represents clients on a wide range of litigation matters, including providing specialist advice for clients on white collar crime and regulatory matters.

Employment Law
  • Advising a multi-national manufacturing company on all its domestic employment matters, including a large scale restructure
  • Advising one of New Zealand’s largest Universities with respect to employment and health and safety advice and training
  • Representing a New Zealand technology development company, and its senior executives, in High Court proceedings alleging breach of restraint of trade and confidentiality/IP rights
  • Representing sportspeople with respect to contractual, selection and disciplinary matters (including international rugby players before IRB and SANZAR judicial hearings)
  • Providing advice to a large energy sector company in respect of the implementation of a comprehensive KiwiSaver and superannuation policy
  • Acting as co-counsel to a leading New Zealand corporate in respect of a claim for in excess of $5m in the Employment Court
  • Providing commercial health and safety advice to a solid energy sector client in respect of its third party contractual arrangements
  • Acting for a number of professional services firms in relation to a range of employment related matters, including personal grievances, partnership disputes, and allegations of improper moonlighting, theft of intellectual property and breach of restraints of trade

White Collar

Aaron is the convenor of the firm's white collar practice group, and regularly advises executives and corporations with respect to government investigations and prosecutions. Examples include:

  • Advising company directors and corporations involved in investigations and prosecutions by the Police, Serious Fraud Office, Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and the Companies Office National Enforcement Unit (NEU)
  • Working with US counsel to represent a New Zealand based defendant in the major US cartel prosecution United States Department of Justice v Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group et al
  • Advising a major international financial institution in respect of a suspected instance of "rogue trading'
  • Advising a major New Zealand financial institution with respect to its obligations and potential liability under anti-money laundering and counter financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) law
  • Defending (with Paul Davison QC) a solicitor charged with money laundering offences under the Financial Transactions Reporting Act
  • Defending transport sector clients in relation to criminal prosecutions taken by New Zealand Customs and the Police for alleged breaches of the Customs and Excise Act and the Land Transport Act
  • Defending a maritime captain in a prosecution by the Department of Labour for health and safety violations

Commercial Litigation and other matters

  • Acting as counsel for the former Managing Director of Sensation Yachts Limited in High Court litigation against the company
  • Acting at external general counsel, to NavSec International, a New Zealand based maritime security firm
  • Appearing as junior counsel (with Howard Keyte QC) in respect of litigation involving the validation of void securities issued in breach of exemption notices under the Securities Act
  • Acting for former MP, Donna Awatere Huata in her High Court litigation (and subsequent appeals) against the ACT Political Party over her status as an MP under the electoral integrity provisions of the Electoral Act (including appearing as co-counsel in the first case heard by the New Zealand Supreme Court)
  • Appearing as counsel (with Richard Craddock QC) in judicial review proceedings in the High Court, in relation to a challenge to a decision of the New Zealand Stock Exchange Takeover's Panel
  • Appearing as counsel (with Paul Davison QC) in respect of High Court litigation to determine matters of governance in respect of the holdings of a major Maori iwi following their Treaty settlement with the Crown
  • Appearing as counsel (with CJ Allan (now Justice Allan)) in a High Court trial for a major New Zealand telecommunications company regarding a dispute over the commercial provision of Internet bandwidth
  • Appearing as counsel at coronial inquests, including with respect to medico-legal matters

Seminars and publications

Aaron regularly speaks at conferences on employment law and white collar topics. Aaron has also lectured at the University of Auckland, and AUT University, and appeared as a media commentator on a range of white collar matters.
